Introduction to Framing Principles and Techniques (Recommended before taking other sessions)
This half day interactive workshop is designed to call into question our most basic assumptions about the mind. We present a variety of scenarios that allow participants to directly confront the way we think—both consciously and unconsciously—as a first step to a deeper understanding of the political mind. By the end, participants will be able to recognize cognitive frames and their consequences in political communication. This sensitivity to the structure of human thought provides the foundation for skill-building in other workshops we provide.

The Practice of Strategic Thinking
This half day interactive workshop explores a range of cognitive mechanisms that impact how we think and communicate about political issues. Stereotypes, conceptual blends, and metonymies are introduced and explored through the analysis of real world examples to show how the ideas we reason with reveal some key truths while concealing others. The art of “thinking outside the box” becomes concrete and practical through practice recognizing how our minds construct categories to make sense of the world and how utilizing this knowledge can assist in articulating political goals and developing effective strategies.

Mapping the Cognitive Landscape for Political Action
This half day interactive workshop makes visible the traps that often ensnare progressive advocates and reveals strategic territories for conquest in the battle of ideas. Participants will recognize that their “battles” are not just about specific actions like reducing mercury or increasing the number of citizens with health insurance. Strategic initiatives must challenge the dominant notions of markets, governance, and the vision of a good society. This map reveals potential courses of action that enable participants to pick their battles well and increase their prospects for victory.

Cognitive Policy and the Operation of Organizations
This half day interactive workshop explores the central role of meaning in our lives as it is constituted in the structure of our social experiences. We are a reflection of the organizations we work within. The cognitive mechanisms explored in other sessions apply equally well to organizational operations. As participants’ knowledge and skills develop they will begin to recognize that the way they engage the political world is as important as the goals they seek to achieve. Right action is truly the path to policy success. By the end of this session, participants will recognize that their organizational roles are consequential and begin the process of critically assessing and transforming their operations so that they are aligned with the mission of their organization.

Each of these sessions takes approximately half a day. They can be packaged for up to two days of intense training on the following pay scale:

1 Session = $800 for 1 trainer, $1200 for 2 trainers
2 Sessions = $1400 for 1 trainer, $1800 for 2 trainers
3 Sessions = $2000 for 1 trainer, $2400 for 2 trainers
4 Sessions = $2400 for 1 trainer, $2800 for 2 trainers

We recommend two trainers for large groups (more than 15 participants) to provide personal attention during break-out activities. These prices are standardized and can be adjusted slightly to accommodate organizations with small operating budgets.
